My name is Pantoufle, for friends Pantie

Pantie 10

Hi Friends!

Why should you be interested in reading about a normal Italian CAT, with a funny French name, Pantoufle (Slipper in English) shortened Pantie (well… embarrassing in English)?

Pantie 13

Strange names were typical in my family. My biological mom used to have an “exotic” name, Nekko, the Japanese translation for cat in English.
When I arrived home, the movie ‘Chocolat’ was very popular in Italy. Dad looked at me and said: “Your name will be Pantoufle like girl’s Bestie in the movie”.

Pantie 14

I have been a very lucky kitty living inside and outside accordingly to my mood. Usually Wednesdays were dedicated to resting and no way I would leave my comfortable basket even if my friends Mosé and Romeo could come and pick me up for an adventure. We used to have a meeting every day at the same time. Mom has never understood where we used to go. It used to be a secret between us cats.

Pantie 5

Hunting has always been my favorite activity but always on my own. I used to be the best terrace guardian against lizards, night butterflies and birds. Mom has always been so upset about it and used to get so mad and shout at me while running to free the poor animals from my jaws.

Pantie 12

“That’s me” I used to think, wondering why she used to be so angry! These humans! But best occasions were in her absence, enjoying the pleasure till the end, hiding the preys under my favorite rug.

Pantie 8

How frightening it was for mom while cleaning up!

Pantie 7

Best season of the year was spring. Neighbors used to come home for a couple of months from Santo Domingo where they lived during the rest of the year. Everyday I run up and down the stairs to roam freely. It came with the terrible price of listening to neighbor lady’s shrills, practicing her soprano voice and smelling her horrible perfume! Unbearable but for free you never get anything.

Pantie 9

My last battle started in February 2013. Very high fever, vet, screening and diagnosis, terrible diagnosis: FELV. No treatment can heal it, only medications to control it.

Pantie 4

Mom and auntie could not believe it. I had always been vaccinated … how could it happen?

Pantie 11

Mom did all what she could, feeding me like a baby, giving me injections, loving me more than ever. No way,  FELV was very aggressive. I have been loosing half of my weight for three months till the very end when I got half paralyzed.

Pantie1

I was a very loved and spoilt kitty and mom was a wonderful parent looking after me all the time, refusing to sleep and being at my side till I was put to eternal sleep and cremated. She was worried I could be mistreated  while reaching the beautiful OTRB meadows. But all her sorrows disappeared when she was reassured she don’t ever have to abandon me and could get my ashes back on the same day.

Pantie2

Hey pals! No tears nor sadness! I am happy now, running free and hunting again. I am no longer suffering and live in my mom’s, beloved ones’ and friends’ heart.

Why you need to have a pet Twitter account? by Joanna

Why you need to have a pet Twitter account?

Hi everybody (effurebody), you probably ask yourself: what is she talking about?
Why this website is covered by videos of  her pet, and she obsessively supports all posts and articles concerning animals only?

Well, my dear readers, I discovered other dimension of our life.

Please, before you quit reading this, let me explain…

IMG_20121208_222215

I won’t repeat how it all started, because you can check post before,  hopefully you read my blog regularly.

But most importantly I want to share the reason why I started with Twitter Pet Lovers Account and why I think all animal oriented people should have it?

As you figured out by now, I fell for my sphynx big time, so I decided to join twitter to connect to pets’ enthusiasts.

I was tremendously surprised by supporting and loving relationship I discovered between pet twitter accounts.

I have to admit I was reluctant at first. My several (or little more) tweets felt like I am talking to myself..

I know, how pitiful you say… I  agree, I felt like I am tweeting to a wall.
IMAG0403

I was even more sad because it has happened when I discovered my sphynx went through ” fake” pregnancy.

For most of you it may seem trivial, but I prepared myself to receive kittens, set up nursery, and emergency kit as well as supplemental feeding. And honestly, called and annoyed every clinic in Manhattan and surrounding areas, asking them thousands of questions. I wanted make sure I choose the best for my cat and her off spring. I was Momma Tigress, roar!

One day, I can’t remember when exactly, I received first favorite feedback, and then retweet and finally first nice response. After that things went spiral. I convinced my family there is other life out there and the closest to call it would be Pet Twitter Heaven!
Screenshot of my Twitter Account

Few months later I have over 2000 followers and counting. I am not planning to go back to three dimensional life anymore.
My existence consists of four dimensions and all thanks to pets and their love and power to transform humans. And I must say twitter was perfect (purrfect) soil for that. You will find there pet related advises, cute pictures, smart jokes, and even romance. And most surprisingly,  if you need shoulder to cry on there is no better place than Pet Twitter Universe. All tweeps are full of compassion, always willing to help, running to rescue. I guarantee you will never feel alone after you join.

So next time you are lonesome, I have advice for you: get a pet and start tweeting.

Dedicated to all my followers. Thank you for all joy you bring to my life.

Kitty at the window by Elwood @MynameisElwood

Kitty at the window

I am a fortunate kittie. In the 10+ years since my family brought me home to become their indoor kittie, many neighbourhood cats have come to visit. One day last fall, a new shadow appeared at my window. Little did I know then, that this kittie would turn out to be as special as me.

Mystery cat shadow

It is not unusual for all neighbourhood cats to come visit on our deck. During the hot days of summer, mummy leaves fresh water every day some food and sometimes, for those kitties we know very well – a little something special. All neighbourhood kitties know to come during the day, but never at night, because we don’t leave treats out. Kitties have homes and need to go home for the night.

When this new cat came along peering through the blinds, neither mummy nor me thought anything of it.  Just another new cat moving into the neighbourhood. Kitty’s visits became so routine that we christened him “Deck Cat;” DC for short. Not very original but it was a name none the less.

Mummy never gave Deck Cat’s visits much thought until the day the thermometer dipped well below zero Celsius and she noticed Deck Cat curled up in the sunshine trying to keep warm in the wind.

Mystery cat sleeping

This was a worry, although very cold out, the snow had not yet come to our deck. Did the people who owned DC not realize that winter would soon be upon us and no cat should be left to wander in the cold?

She cracked open the deck door, slowly whispering her classic “Sweetie Pies”.
A startled DC bolted from the warm and safety of the deck, down the stairs, and vanished! Perhaps Deck Cat headed for his home? We found out later that more likely, DC bolted under our deck.

Working against time and temperature, Mummy made several attempts to capture DC before the cruel winter weather set in – but to no avail. Deck Cat eluded her, but always returned

Mystery cat at the window

for a little water and a treat. As the weather turned colder, mummy set up a box in a high place, out of the wind and she continued to lure Deck Cat into a cat carrier without success. DC did not like people… not even my mummy!

Winter garage

One particularly cold wintery night we noticed our back neighbour puttering in his garage workshop. Although nothing to do with Deck Cat, Daddy was happy to see this fellow up and about again – since we had not seen this neighbour since his accident last fall. Our neighbour went to his workshop almost every cold night, followed by his dwag. The workshop light was bright and the chimney puffed great floofs of smoke – it must be a very warm workshop indeed. And Mummy secretly hoped that DC found a way in to that warm garage.

Deck Cat survived winter; he visited our deck daily!
 Mystery Cat Pretty pose

He ate and drank what mummy left out for him and Mummy kept two wind-block boxes outside – one on the deck in a high spot, another under the deck where we all assumed DC retreated to when it became unbearably cold.

We last saw DC on the fence, just before a very bad spring storm, the hail was so loud I put paws over my ears while hiding in a closet! Mummy was so worried about Deck Cat – what if the hail hit him? What if he was too scared of the thunder? What if something really bad happened? Mummy was so upset, when the storm stopped she asked Dad to help look for DC. They looked for two days… nothing. Mummy calls “Sweetie Pies, Sweetie Pies..” Nothing. Food went untouched, the new blankets in the wind-block boxes void of cat hair. Deck Cat was gone. It wasn’t until daddy asked the “garage guy” neighbour why he was taking down a trampoline that we found out exactly where DC went!

Over the winter Deck Cat befriended “Garage Guy.” It began during that first cold snap in November, DC found his way through the pet door in GG’s garage. Garage Guy just let DC be that first night. The next, GG brought some food and water to the garage and left the cat flap open for DC to come and go as he pleased.  That’s how it went over the winter and into spring. Then one day, DC jumped up onto the workbench and rubbed against the Garage Guy’s hand. That’s when Mrs. GG decided they should adopt DC and loaded Deck Cat into a his very own cat carrier and off to the rescue vet they went, to have DC checked out – and to make sure that indeed no one owned him.

In between his visits to the rescue vet to make sure DC didn’t feel abandoned, Garage Guy took down the family trampoline and put up a cat enclosure.

DC now Dudley home for the last time

Today, Deck Cat – now DUDLEY, came home – to his forever home. Never to wander between our houses looking for food and shelter, never to feel lonely – but then, neither will Mr and Mrs. Garage Guy!

Elwood’s Life – I am captured! by Elwood @MynameisElwood

Elwood’s Life – I am captured!

I am a fortunate kitty… I wasn’t born in a place where cats are eaten or put into fighting pens. While you might tend to feel sorry for me when you learn that I grew up on the streets before being rescued at 10 months (they think) I encourage you not to feel bad for me. You see, I’m a special kitty… not because I sez I am.

Other roaming cats and dwags teased me cause I don’t have a tail. They told me my Daddy was a rabbit and my mummy was a cat! I didn’t think that was a bad thing, so I didn’t take their bait… I didn’t fight, but I didn’t walk away either. Because of this the other cats began to think that I lost my tail in a fight! I let them think what they want.

Garbage

One day while I was on the prowl for empty tuna tins – one with a little juice and a morsel of tuna was a blessing to find – I was captured! At the time I thought this was very bad… I was behind bars and the cell moved! But I couldn’t see outside! For the first time in my little life I was truly scared. Everything was so much bigger than me… and the peoples… I hadn’t had much contact with peoples.

kitty paw

After what seemed to be a lifetime, my cell stopped moving; I was taken to a room with lots of little cells and lots of cats – all different colours, shapes, and ages! I’d never seen so many kitties in one place at one time. Some were crying, others were sleeping, some were eating… and one old bandaged, scruffy cat looked at me and meowed “Youse be okay, youse young, youse different, youse special, youse be outta here before yer time is up.” Barely getting “fanks” off my tongue, I was placed into a cell… very high… above the other cells. There I found new paper, some food and some water. Then the light went away… and wez all left in darkness.

That was a long night. I ate some – it was crunchy… I liked dat sound. I drank some and then went to sleep. In the morning, I had to go to the garden – real bad… but there wasn’t a place for that and I ended up going in my cell. Oh the horror! Eating, sleeping and now “gardening” in the same place. I didn’t like that. Not one bit. A human reached in and took me from my cell.

vets operating

I meowed that it wasn’t my fault, “eyes a kitty, eyes didn’t mean to do that in my cell…” the human cuddled me and talk very softly to me… I don’t know what was said… I only know it sounded real nice… I was comforted. Until I was brought into the bright light place… peoples had things over their faces and their paws… this was a trap! I knew it! I struggled to get away, but couldn’t… the biggest human took me firmly but kinda gentle too. Their paws touched my coat, my paws, my ears, my nose, my eyes, in my mouth, and finally my behind – with no tail! The peoples make a funny sound I never heard before. Then I felt very sleepy, I tried to stay awake but just couldn’t.

At first I thought I was dreaming when I woke up… funny dream of being captured and fed, and celled. Then I really woke to find I wasn’t dreaming and worse – I was hurting, like my tail had been chopped off. But it wasn’t my tail. Uh oh! I feel asleep again.

The days passed – no longer did I have to search for food or water, it was brought to me. Even gardening in my cell wasn’t too bad, if I did it right before the paper was changed, but then I heard whispers. Whispers after the light goes away and the peoples goes away. In the darkness the whispers about the kitties who stay too long and then disappear! To this day, I don’t know what that means but I still get real scared that something real bad happens to kitties who “stay too long.” Was this going to be me?

One day I heard a beautiful voice… it was the first time I heard it and the first time I understood human words. The voice said “Sweetie-pies, how are you?” I looked through my cell and saw two humans not dressed like the ones I usually see. Theys were talking to a ginger cat with a long beautiful tail and yellow eyes – directly across from me. They stood there talking with that kittie for a long time and then they went away. They hadn’t seen me…

cages

The light went away and came back and went away again, when the light came back again – I heard a familiar voice. It wasn’t the sweetie pie voice, it was the other one. I sat up real straight and put on my best smile. I was right – it was the bigger person and a small person who looked the same?! The small person looked at me – saw me – and pointed to me! The bigger person was tall enough to reach a wee finger into my cell and I licked it and smiled my best smile.
When the cell people came by the bigger person pointed to me! The cell people opened my cell and brought me to another place… the big and little person came, too. I began to purrrrrr my best purrrrrrr, I rubbed my best rub, and the little person picked me up ever so gentle and said “Hello Elwood!” Elwood… what did that mean? I didn’t care. The cell people put me in a box with holes; I felt like I was moving again, only this time isn’t wasn’t so scary. I could hear those voices… the little one kept repeating “Elwood.” Maybe it was a greeting! I think I fell asleep, I felt so safe and tired!

kittie facing

I awoke to the small voice now booming “Mummy come meet Elwood!” The box opened and I blinked to get used to the light and looked up at the Sweetie-pie voice, who was smiling until I climbed out of the box. Something is wrong… the big people look at each other… the bigger one moves his shoulders, they look at the little person who pets me and I purrs and rubs… and Sweetie Pie voice smiles at me and say “Hello, Elwood! Welcome to your new home!”

Little Sphynx Story – How To Train Humans by Coco-Mau Aqua

Little Sphynx Story

Hello everyone and effurybody and furless fellows.  It’s about a time I write here too. Meow.

My name is Coco-Mau Aqua. I live with my Meowmy, Joanna in Manhattan. In several days I will be 2 years old.

IMG_20130518_050534

I was born in New York City to European Peterbald Sphynx parents.

I was 1 of 4 siblings: 2 brothers and 1 sister. My breeders wanted me to be adopted at 7 weeks which is too early to leave your Mom if you are sphynx kitten.

When I saw a blond girl with big eyes walking into the room I used to live in with my family, I felt like I want to impress her and showed off my best moves, ignoring everybody around. Obviously my smooth, confident catwalk worked. The girl fell in love with me instantly.

She took me on a long trip and brought me to our home. From first moments I thought she look like a spoilt type and decided to train her a little.

IMG_20130406_125933

For sacred bonito flakes was it a challenge?

She had her “world” designed just for her. So I did some cleaning and made sure I had my 7 cat houses and palaces spread throughout apartment  My food and water bowls were placed everywhere since I can get hungry or thirsty at any given moment. Her cosmetics were pushed to the side and my kitty line set display.

Her bed belongs to me now, and I taught her not to crowd me, it’s a queen size and I am the real Queen since I am not spayed, yet.

IMG_20130115_002144

I even occupy toilet and use it like humans do. I use bathtub for weekly babble bath and my clothes and toys are all over the place.

I developed Meowglish language for her to understand me better. She had many blond moments and as every human she’s not as smart as pets are.  With time and my constant effort she finally gets idea what I meow in Meowglish.

I look after my Joanna because at times she is clumsy, forgetful or just starry-eyed. Once she lit a candle under wood shelf which caught fire. Since she was in another room I brought her to the candle to show her what trouble she started.

She often burns food too. So when smoke comes out the pots I am the one to alert her. And Oh My Cat, she is careless with water, so when sink or bathtub overflows I call her before neighbors do.

IMG_20121207_025516

Don’t understand me wrong I love this slightly idealistic, sensitive and passionate girl.

She is so cute when she cries if I feel sick or when she leans over to kiss me good night and adjust cover on me at least 20 times.

I like to call Joanna in Meowglish to get her attention when she is busy because she runs to me every time. I think it means she knows how to listen to commends. She picks up things I purposely drop for some ‘gravitation adventure’. I call it human fetching. She also does fetch well distant items I’m too lazy to get.

I care a lot and meow strongly to play chase with me at least 15 min a day so her heart will get some exercise and she will stay healthy.

In my conclusion dear Anipals I want you to know that it is possible to train your human and arise them accordingly to your needs.

Be gentle and easy on humans after all they just people. Hide their GPS and see how they find home if they far away. Better don’t try it because you will, you will need to get a new human. Unless they annoy you…

I guard my Joanna and make sure she is in the bed with me on time. Even if she comes with all her electronic devices. She understands enough Meowglish to recognize my callings and orders. I have a strong feeling this girl needs me and I’m her only chance to live safely and happily.

Since she is my typist I see her getting all teary and sentimental as she writes what I meow. Looks like she wants cuddles and nose kisses. Have to go and comfort her a little. Meow till next time Darlings.

Sphynx Care – Nails and Teeth

Sphynx Care – Nails and Teeth

Nails

Nails of sphynx are same as other cats’ so you will have to clip them every 2-3 weeks. I recommend sharp, always disinfected clippers to prevent crushing of the nail. And like with all cats you have to cut about 2 mm from the quick. Start to trim nails regularly in young kittens so they get used to procedure. Use trimmers which are most comfortable for you. It’s a good idea to own scratching post or two to give your sphynx chance to sharpen claws and satisfy their natural instinct of scratching. Sphynx have dark brown, sometimes almost black residue around their nail’s beds. It is a normal product of sweat glands situated between toes. In “hairy” cats you can’t see it, because it hides under their hair. Sphynx have no hair so it’s visible to naked eye. Sphynx are cleaning their nails daily. If you wish to remove some of gunky sweat ( it’s get darker when meets with oxygen) you make use watered q-tip swabs and gently clean around each nail after bath or trimming. Use new q-tip for each nail. When you trim nails don’t forget about dewclaw.

I vote strongly against declawing, it involves the amputation of the last bone of each toe and leaves pet scarred physically and mentally for life! If you consider that option you should not be the pet owner ever.

CMA grooming her nails

Teeth

Sphynx like all the cats need daily oral hygiene. There are plenty of products on the market. I recommend to use whatever works for you, since you need to do it regularly. Just make sure you don’t use products for humans, they are dangerous for cats. Remember to clean all teeth, not only front ones. Sphynx teeth are smaller than other cats. So be careful when you feed them. Use right size dry kibble (remember cat’s teeth weren’t design to grind) and check for bones before you feed your pet with fish (even from famous and popular brands). If you started new food let your sphynx to try when you are watching. Some dry products are simply too big and or hard for sphynx to either chew them or swallow. Also avoid food or treats with sugars in them as they are causing teeth problems same way do for humans.

Important to remember that sphynx are prone to hypothermia and hypoglycemia. So talk to your veterinarian about best method of anesthesiology during teeth cleaning procedure (during spaying or neutering also).

I hope you will remember to keep well-balanced, nutritious diet. Keep water and some food available at all times. Sphynx need more calories than hairy felines so having snack sized food can become handy. Sphynx feel when they need extra calories to bring their sugar levels higher or due to sudden drop in the temperature. Their metabolism is higher than other pets so don’t feed them just twice a day. They need food at least 4-6 times in 24 hours.

Sphynx Care – Ears and Eyes

Sphynx Care – Ears and Eyes

Eyes

Sphynx don’t have eyelashes, their eyes produce thicker than tears discharge which works as a moisturizer, protector and cleanser.  Sphynx clean their own eyes and wipe off brownish, jelly like residue. But if for some reason they have left some significant amount of discharge you may use soft (lint free) washcloth with warm water. Be gentle and wipe outside of the closed eye, moving from outer towards inner corner. Don’t poke your kitty’s eyes, you could cause serious problems. Sphynx are fragile creatures so always be extra careful in handling them. After wiping eyes you may delicately pass washcloth over mouth and the face since those parts get dirty quicker than rest of the body.

I don’t like to recommend baby wipes because all of them contain chemicals. As we all know cats clean themselves with saliva and will lick it off  at some point, which can’t be good.

sphynx ear eye care

Ears

Since sphynx have no hair in their ears you may notice they produce more wax than other cats. This sometimes dark in color wax is there to protect the inner ear from bacteria, viruses etc. Some owners like to use oils, vitamin A or Hydrogen Peroxide to help with excess wax. I believe best approach to keep ears healthy is to use well rolled q-tips swabs or cotton balls (because you don’t want pieces of cotton to be left in the ear) and gently pat  it in between of outer ear flap, following natural curves.

It’s important that after each bath you dry ears from water. Sphynx like to shake off after bath. If water got into  their ears would be naturally moved to outer parts. You can gently pat and swipe but do not rub (!) with dry q-tip or cotton ball, excess water or wax should be absorbed by cotton. Make sure you use fresh end of cotton each time you dry or clean new part of the ear. If you want to get rid of wax from ear canal make sure you don’t go deeper than 0,1 of  the inch.  Perform all ear  maintenance slowly and delicately, do not puncture eardrums. Clean ears every 3 to 4 days and after each bath.

If you see any unusual discharge from eyes or/and ears , or just feel concerned contact your veterinarian.

Sphynx Care – Bath

Sphynx Care – Bath

Sphynx needs to be bathed regularly. They usually have no visible hair and produce sebum which protects their skin from pathogens, moisturizes, softens and provides elasticity.

Usually each sphynx  needs bath weekly, but some with drier skin can go without as long as 2-3 weeks. If you don’t wash them often enough their pores become clogged and  blackheads may develop.

I advise to start to wash them at least once a week from the moment they are weaned (even twice a week for few months), so they get used to baths and washing them would be easy in the future.

First of all remember about right temperature of bathroom or room you will wash them in and also the room they will play/ sleep after the bath. Make sure there are no drafts and minimum 70 F. The temperature of water should be warm but not hot. Easiest method is to put your elbow in bath and you should feel warm but not hot ( 89-95 F).

You may play a lot  just before bath , when cat will be tired it’s easier to wash her.  Just be gentle. They like feel of warm water, but scrubbing could be a problem. Use delicate “tear free”, hypoallergenic liquid soap for babies or kittens. It should be diluted, you may pour some in a bathtub to create bubble bath. I don’t think washing them in sink is good. If you put too less water they get cold and become stressed. Pour 8-12 ” of water, make sure no higher than cats base of neck. I like to use bathtub so you can drop few floating toys and just let sphynx walk or play for 10-15 minutes in bubble bath so water is washing off dirt painlessly. You may put towel on the bottom of bathtub to prevent slips. If you have no bathtub, buy one for babies. Having her in the sink forces you to do everything quickly,  putting stress on her and you.

CMA bath tub

To remove blackheads I use cotton balls drenched in medical alcohol and run over the cat’s skin where problems occurred and gently but quickly put sphynx in the bath so pet has no chance to lick it off. You can use Noxzema anti- blemish pads.

I don’t use oil, makes skin more oily, hence more blackheads. I massage gently skin starting from the head to a tail using baby bath sponge or washcloth. You may put few drops of conditioning oil in the water. I recommend food grade as you should never give cat essential oils, it could damage her liver.

You may put cotton balls in the ears to prevent water from entering. I like to have plastic bottle with warmer than bath water, as I use it on the end to rinse cat,  pressure from faucet or shower head may scare them. Have your towels ready, and don’t leave sphynx unsupervised ever.

Use towels with gently motion, this will get rid of old skin and rest of dirt and makes good massage to invigorate skin. I like to put hoodie or warm sweater on the her, so she doesn’t get cold.

Very important to dry ears with cotton balls or q-tips right after the bath.

Please remember: wait an hour after feeding to bathe them. And make sure you have some food ready after bath as they lose lots of heat during washing and usually get hungry. I recommend extra blankets so they can snuggle and sleep.

Bath time could be great to bond and play with your sphynx and it keeps them healthy so make it a fun time!

How it all started…

How it all started…

It was hot July day in Manhattan. I was searching through listings of pets for adoption and sale, looking for my cat or dog, still unsure which way to go.

Suddenly came across pictures of tiny aliens on a red carpet. Immediately started to read the whole post.

Coco-Mau Aqua kitteh

I called my sister, Patricia who studies to be a vet. I send her email with the pictures and description of small creatures.

She told me sphynx would be a perfect match for me since I am torn between cats and dogs. Peterbald sphynx often are referred to as mix of baby, monkey, dog and cat. I can confirm that opinion after 2 years of my experiences:).

My sister verdict was clear: get referred as “white” most wrinkled female. I called the breeder and we agreed I would come next day after 5 pm.

It was July 13th, Wednesday afternoon. I wasn’t sure what to take with me, so I grabbed my basket purse and red towel ( I believe red is a lucky color)  and of course cash so I can pay without the fuss. I stopped taxi to take me to the breeder’s home. We were stuck in traffic on FDR , passing shiny waters of East Hudson River. I was trembling, having this overwhelming feeling that something big will happen. My taxi driver looked at me as I was a weird person, unsure why I am so excited and stressed. I wanted to be on time as I knew other people were about to come too and see kittens. Since we spent almost 2 hours in the traffic the weather started to change. Big clouds pulled rain and summer thunderstorm. When we arrived at the destination I asked driver to wait for me so I could minimize risk of getting kitten wet.

I walked into cool, rather dark room and I saw mother of kittens , graciously sitting on a couch like a real queen receiving visitors. She was an exotic beauty, almost aristocratic futures. Around her were running 3 kittens. 2 boys and 1 girl. I recognized my  ” white wrinkled female” right away. She was quite a site , less than 1/2 of pound, strutting independently and confidently around like she knew she’s a champion. She managed to jump on the couch trying to ignore me and her brothers, who were more interested in playing with humans. When ‘boys’ decided it’s a feeding time, they walked up to the “queen’ and latched.  Seeing that their sister rushed to the mother and pushing both brothers with her tiny body, took the best spot and became to eat. As I was staring at her getting mother’s milk for a last time I felt very emotional and guilty for taking her from such a happy, careless 7 week old life and protective, loving paws of her mom.

This kitten had this incredible charisma which makes you want to be her fan. The inner strength and light coming from her tiny, wiggly body was mesmerizing and caught my heart and attention immediately. I fell in love with small, warm , soft female sphynx, with blue slanting eyes ( all kitten are born with light eyes), and moves worth best runways. I knew she is the one. The owner told me her bigger brother is more friendly and tried to convince me I would have more fun with him, but I knew that this royal mannered, ignoring everyone “white most wrinkled” sphynx was my match. I called my sister to make sure I checked physical health properly and asked right questions. I paid and took her into my arms, put her on my chest and covered with red towel, worried not to loose her.

Luckily the taxi driver was still waiting outside and when I showed him my new kitten he became as mesmerized and excited as I already was.

As we were driving on the highway by Hudson River my heart was singing from happiness and overwhelming  love I felt. I asked  the driver to drop me by Petco store. With kitten on my chest, probably a face of an incredibly happy person, often perceived by others as a “craze in the eyes” , I spotted manager, who was very experienced “dad of 4 cats” and he guided me through shopping on basic stuff kittens need.

I remember walking so proudly on Lexington Ave, slowly ( due to kitten sleeping on my chest and big bags from Petco) going home.  I felt like I just won lottery.

When I finally came home I spent whole night looking at my little sphynx, checking if she breathed and sleeping with extended arm as she fell asleep under my armpit:-).

And  to my surprise I fall in love with her again each morning. I melt when look at her independent, wiggly, nonchalant, still tiny body. I love more every day her gorgeous, smart, gold eyes, and little mouth which creates thousand different meows, each  to describe different things or words. I am amazed and I feel guilty. What did I do to deserve this intelligent creature to be part of my life?  She makes me grateful for all I have. She makes me think of all wonderful pets and animals who don’t have home, nor love, or worse who are tortured and killed by humans. I believe Coco-Mau Aqua and I are meant to be together. And I think she is my best achievement and she made me a better person. I stopped to be self centered girl. I became a guardian to her. And she became my teacher and guide . Thanks to her I changed direction of my life and decided to involve in helping animals and spreading joy they can give humans if we only care.  I believe that if pets are given a chance and little of love and dignity, they can became those perfect creatures who fill our life with marvels of their pure love. I wish each human to at least once experience that wonderful feeling of having a pet in their life.
