Elwood’s Life – I am captured! by Elwood @MynameisElwood

Elwood’s Life – I am captured!

I am a fortunate kitty… I wasn’t born in a place where cats are eaten or put into fighting pens. While you might tend to feel sorry for me when you learn that I grew up on the streets before being rescued at 10 months (they think) I encourage you not to feel bad for me. You see, I’m a special kitty… not because I sez I am.

Other roaming cats and dwags teased me cause I don’t have a tail. They told me my Daddy was a rabbit and my mummy was a cat! I didn’t think that was a bad thing, so I didn’t take their bait… I didn’t fight, but I didn’t walk away either. Because of this the other cats began to think that I lost my tail in a fight! I let them think what they want.

Garbage

One day while I was on the prowl for empty tuna tins – one with a little juice and a morsel of tuna was a blessing to find – I was captured! At the time I thought this was very bad… I was behind bars and the cell moved! But I couldn’t see outside! For the first time in my little life I was truly scared. Everything was so much bigger than me… and the peoples… I hadn’t had much contact with peoples.

kitty paw

After what seemed to be a lifetime, my cell stopped moving; I was taken to a room with lots of little cells and lots of cats – all different colours, shapes, and ages! I’d never seen so many kitties in one place at one time. Some were crying, others were sleeping, some were eating… and one old bandaged, scruffy cat looked at me and meowed “Youse be okay, youse young, youse different, youse special, youse be outta here before yer time is up.” Barely getting “fanks” off my tongue, I was placed into a cell… very high… above the other cells. There I found new paper, some food and some water. Then the light went away… and wez all left in darkness.

That was a long night. I ate some – it was crunchy… I liked dat sound. I drank some and then went to sleep. In the morning, I had to go to the garden – real bad… but there wasn’t a place for that and I ended up going in my cell. Oh the horror! Eating, sleeping and now “gardening” in the same place. I didn’t like that. Not one bit. A human reached in and took me from my cell.

vets operating

I meowed that it wasn’t my fault, “eyes a kitty, eyes didn’t mean to do that in my cell…” the human cuddled me and talk very softly to me… I don’t know what was said… I only know it sounded real nice… I was comforted. Until I was brought into the bright light place… peoples had things over their faces and their paws… this was a trap! I knew it! I struggled to get away, but couldn’t… the biggest human took me firmly but kinda gentle too. Their paws touched my coat, my paws, my ears, my nose, my eyes, in my mouth, and finally my behind – with no tail! The peoples make a funny sound I never heard before. Then I felt very sleepy, I tried to stay awake but just couldn’t.

At first I thought I was dreaming when I woke up… funny dream of being captured and fed, and celled. Then I really woke to find I wasn’t dreaming and worse – I was hurting, like my tail had been chopped off. But it wasn’t my tail. Uh oh! I feel asleep again.

The days passed – no longer did I have to search for food or water, it was brought to me. Even gardening in my cell wasn’t too bad, if I did it right before the paper was changed, but then I heard whispers. Whispers after the light goes away and the peoples goes away. In the darkness the whispers about the kitties who stay too long and then disappear! To this day, I don’t know what that means but I still get real scared that something real bad happens to kitties who “stay too long.” Was this going to be me?

One day I heard a beautiful voice… it was the first time I heard it and the first time I understood human words. The voice said “Sweetie-pies, how are you?” I looked through my cell and saw two humans not dressed like the ones I usually see. Theys were talking to a ginger cat with a long beautiful tail and yellow eyes – directly across from me. They stood there talking with that kittie for a long time and then they went away. They hadn’t seen me…

cages

The light went away and came back and went away again, when the light came back again – I heard a familiar voice. It wasn’t the sweetie pie voice, it was the other one. I sat up real straight and put on my best smile. I was right – it was the bigger person and a small person who looked the same?! The small person looked at me – saw me – and pointed to me! The bigger person was tall enough to reach a wee finger into my cell and I licked it and smiled my best smile.
When the cell people came by the bigger person pointed to me! The cell people opened my cell and brought me to another place… the big and little person came, too. I began to purrrrrr my best purrrrrrr, I rubbed my best rub, and the little person picked me up ever so gentle and said “Hello Elwood!” Elwood… what did that mean? I didn’t care. The cell people put me in a box with holes; I felt like I was moving again, only this time isn’t wasn’t so scary. I could hear those voices… the little one kept repeating “Elwood.” Maybe it was a greeting! I think I fell asleep, I felt so safe and tired!

kittie facing

I awoke to the small voice now booming “Mummy come meet Elwood!” The box opened and I blinked to get used to the light and looked up at the Sweetie-pie voice, who was smiling until I climbed out of the box. Something is wrong… the big people look at each other… the bigger one moves his shoulders, they look at the little person who pets me and I purrs and rubs… and Sweetie Pie voice smiles at me and say “Hello, Elwood! Welcome to your new home!”

Coco-Mau Aqua baby8

How it all started…

How it all started…

It was hot July day in Manhattan. I was searching through listings of pets for adoption and sale, looking for my cat or dog, still unsure which way to go.

Suddenly came across pictures of tiny aliens on a red carpet. Immediately started to read the whole post.

Coco-Mau Aqua kitteh

I called my sister, Patricia who studies to be a vet. I send her email with the pictures and description of small creatures.

She told me sphynx would be a perfect match for me since I am torn between cats and dogs. Peterbald sphynx often are referred to as mix of baby, monkey, dog and cat. I can confirm that opinion after 2 years of my experiences:).

My sister verdict was clear: get referred as “white” most wrinkled female. I called the breeder and we agreed I would come next day after 5 pm.

It was July 13th, Wednesday afternoon. I wasn’t sure what to take with me, so I grabbed my basket purse and red towel ( I believe red is a lucky color)  and of course cash so I can pay without the fuss. I stopped taxi to take me to the breeder’s home. We were stuck in traffic on FDR , passing shiny waters of East Hudson River. I was trembling, having this overwhelming feeling that something big will happen. My taxi driver looked at me as I was a weird person, unsure why I am so excited and stressed. I wanted to be on time as I knew other people were about to come too and see kittens. Since we spent almost 2 hours in the traffic the weather started to change. Big clouds pulled rain and summer thunderstorm. When we arrived at the destination I asked driver to wait for me so I could minimize risk of getting kitten wet.

Coco-Mau Aqua baby kitteh

I walked into cool, rather dark room and I saw mother of kittens , graciously sitting on a couch like a real queen receiving visitors. She was an exotic beauty, almost aristocratic futures. Around her were running 3 kittens. 2 boys and 1 girl. I recognized my  ” white wrinkled female” right away. She was quite a site , less than 1/2 of pound, strutting independently and confidently around like she knew she’s a champion. She managed to jump on the couch trying to ignore me and her brothers, who were more interested in playing with humans. When ‘boys’ decided it’s a feeding time, they walked up to the “queen’ and latched.  Seeing that their sister rushed to the mother and pushing both brothers with her tiny body, took the best spot and became to eat. As I was staring at her getting mother’s milk for a last time I felt very emotional and guilty for taking her from such a happy, careless 7 week old life and protective, loving paws of her mom.

This kitten had this incredible charisma which makes you want to be her fan. The inner strength and light coming from her tiny, wiggly body was mesmerizing and caught my heart and attention immediately. I fell in love with small, warm , soft female sphynx, with blue slanting eyes ( all kitten are born with light eyes), and moves worth best runways. I knew she is the one. The owner told me her bigger brother is more friendly and tried to convince me I would have more fun with him, but I knew that this royal mannered, ignoring everyone “white most wrinkled” sphynx was my match. I called my sister to make sure I checked physical health properly and asked right questions. I paid and took her into my arms, put her on my chest and covered with red towel, worried not to loose her.

IMAG0381

Luckily the taxi driver was still waiting outside and when I showed him my new kitten he became as mesmerized and excited as I already was.

As we were driving on the highway by Hudson River my heart was singing from happiness and overwhelming  love I felt. I asked  the driver to drop me by Petco store. With kitten on my chest, probably a face of an incredibly happy person, often perceived by others as a “craze in the eyes” , I spotted manager, who was very experienced “dad of 4 cats” and he guided me through shopping on basic stuff kittens need.

I remember walking so proudly on Lexington Ave, slowly ( due to kitten sleeping on my chest and big bags from Petco) going home.  I felt like I just won lottery.

CMA first pic

When I finally came home I spent whole night looking at my little sphynx, checking if she breathed and sleeping with extended arm as she fell asleep under my armpit:-).

And  to my surprise I fall in love with her again each morning. I melt when look at her independent, wiggly, nonchalant, still tiny body. I love more every day her gorgeous, smart, gold eyes, and little mouth which creates thousand different meows, each  to describe different things or words. I am amazed and I feel guilty. What did I do to deserve this intelligent creature to be part of my life?  She makes me grateful for all I have. She makes me think of all wonderful pets and animals who don’t have home, nor love, or worse who are tortured and killed by humans. I believe Coco-Mau Aqua and I are meant to be together. And I think she is my best achievement and she made me a better person. I stopped to be self centered girl. I became a guardian to her. And she became my teacher and guide . Thanks to her I changed direction of my life and decided to involve in helping animals and spreading joy they can give humans if we only care.  I believe that if pets are given a chance and little of love and dignity, they can became those perfect creatures who fill our life with marvels of their pure love. I wish each human to at least once experience that wonderful feeling of having a pet in their life.

Things to consider before you get a pet

Things to consider before you get a pet

Getting new pet or adding another one is not for everyone.

As I stand for pets’ welfare I want you to think hard before you adopt or buy a pet.

Abandoned cat

Let’s first concentrate on people who buy or adopt their very first animal.

Are they familiar with responsibility, work, sacrifice and cost of practically new family member?

As studies show and millions of unwanted pets every year most of them are clueless.

This article is for them.

Having pet is expensive , specially in today’s economy.

You will have to consider food expense (some pets are finicky and refuse to eat what you buy or prepare, so some money will be wasted).

Feeding pets with leftovers is dangerous to their health and doesn’t give them proper nutrition.

You will need veterinarian , who will make regular check ups, proper vaccinations, spay/neuter , dental cleanings.

And in case of an emergency you must know simple X-ray or sonogram starts at $200.

You must pet proof your home.  Similarly to a child proofing it takes convenience out of your life.

You will have to hide wires, get rid of small items easy to swallow or choke on, store away plastic bags (animals like to chew on them), fence your yard or put pet resistant windows’  screens, get rid of easy to fell sculptures, decorations, poisonous plants etc.

You will need to provide leisure time and entertain your pet. They don’t take care of themselves as it is believed.

It could cost you a pretty penny to pay for toys, training, houses, kennels, accessories, grooming,  pet trees and gyms.

And yes, you need pet sitter in case you travel away.

Pets can unintentionally (driven by nature) make damages to your possessions. Usually they have a good taste and destroy something that has value to you (chew on your stilettos, pee on antic carpet, scratch leather couch).

You will invest in new vacuums, cleaners safe for pets, deterrents, pet carriers, bowls, towels, shampoos, vitamin supplements to name few.

Cute bunnies

If you are pet owner already and want to add another one, you will have to consider their characters, compatibility, and additional cost and time you will spend to help them readjust to the situation and than to care for them.

If they aren’t cut out to share home together it may have tragic results (sleepless nights, injuries, aggressive or destructive behavior).

And let’s don’t forget to think about family members (children included) and their suitableness  to relationship with new pet.

And please make sure law in your home area doesn’t prohibit to own the pet or certain breed.

Maltreated hamster

I love all pets so I want them to have responsible, ready for challenge, capable guardians. It’s easier to find first home for any pet, but after they are “pre-owned”  they become less desirable by potential caretakers. Often they turn into abused and even killed silent victims of unprepared owners. Many times they die on the streets or shelters or worse, secretly tortured at their homes.

People who are unaware of challenges of having pets most likely will cause unplanned pet pregnancies, damages to their health or fatal accidents. They won’t be able to keep them safe and happy. Their ignorance could even cost pet’s life.

We are responsible for animals welfare

I strongly believe not every human is good enough to be a pet owner. There are people who shouldn’t add animals to their family. It takes special kind of person who will put pet’s needs as a priority and would be able to give them love and proper care. And who will commit to keep pet regardless of challenges.

Humans destroyed natural habitat of animal kingdom (feral cats and dogs included), so the least they should do is give animals opportunity to live life in dignity, safety, peace and love.

As every pet owner knows it’s a privilege to be one.

Pets give us something money, power, possessions, words can’t: unconditional pet love.

And that feeling gives new dimension to our life, one which you can’t reach, unless you have a pet.

Latté’s Story by Cyndi Andrew @CyndiandLatte

Latté’s Story

I had been looking to adopt a cat for quite a while.  I had always been afraid to have a cat because I’m not home much and thought that I wouldn’t be able to properly care for a cat.  I learned differently when I was watching a friend’s cat while they were away.

I learned that cats are more self-sufficient than what I thought they were.

I adopted Latté from the humane society in May 2009.  As I was checking the daily listing of cats that were in adopt her face really stood out to me and I had a real strong feeling that she was to be my cat.  She was a little older than what I wanted, but, I knew she was the cat for me.  I went to the humane society early that Saturday morning to take a look at her.  I couldn’t find her.  One of the adoption counselors was able to find her for me.  When the counselor brought her to me I could see that she was the cat that had been strutting past me several times with her head and tail held high.  For all I know she may also have felt that I was going to give her a new home and was trying to impress me.
To this day she still struts with her head and tail held high.  As soon as I held her I knew she would be going home with me that day.  She didn’t like being held for long; and even now holding her is on her terms; but I knew she was going to be mine.  The counselor didn’t know anything about her except that she was picked up as a stray in a rough part of town.  I also suspected that she had been hurt previously because she would run and hide from me when she saw that I found the hairball she had hacked up or if I got the broom to do some sweeping.

When I got her home she went and hid under the bed and wouldn’t come near me for several hours.  She eventually came closer to me while at the same time keeping her distance from me.  By the time I went to bed that night she was okay with being close to me and slept with me.  To this day Latté and I have a strong bond that gets stronger all the time and can’t be broken.

Latté is a real blessing to me.  I have depression and am prone to some bad headaches.  Latté is always here for me and doesn’t leave my side until I’m feeling better.  Latté is a real joy to have.  The love and care she gives me is priceless.  There have been many times that she has had a salt water bath from me because I’m stressed and just not feeling well.  I so enjoy the head butts, kisses, and healing purrs that she gives to me.

Our story of survival and everlasting love by @katkay41

Our story of survival and everlasting love

We found our furever home when we were given to our hooman mom as her birthday present.

Gilbert baby

I’m Gilbert, the Tabby, and my sisterfur tortie is Bella.

Bella as baby

Our mom was killed by a wild dog along with my other brothers and sisters.

A nice lady rescued us and gave us away in front of a supermarket.

We needed and missed mom but our hooman mom did a good job bottle feeding us till we got healthy and strong.

One extremely hot summer night mom went out for something she calls iced coffee.

There, in the parking lot she found Fluffy.

Fluffy

She was skin and bones.

She had been left abandoned with no way to fend for herself since she had been declawed.

She was at the brink of death with her little bones protruding from her skin.

We took her in and nursed her back to health.

Fluffy’s resilience and will to live made mom want to do something for neglected and abused animals.

She joined something called the ASPCA and ran her first half marathon in Los Angeles, CA to raise awareness to a cause very dear to us.

Bringing awareness

Here she is dressed as a cat as she crossed the finish line.

Crossing finish line

Crossing finish line

She’s so silly!

Mom found Fluffy and great furever home where she saved the life of a lady who’s husband was dying of cancer.

Fluffy made his last days so happy.

Mom knew she had a purpose in life, as we all do.

When he passed away, Fluffy’s new mom said she would have never made it without her.

Fluffy gave the lady a will and reason to live.

Something to look forward to every day.

Not shortly after Fluffy found her new home Lucy came into our lives.

Lucy

Mom was asleep when she received a call from our neighbor who had been walking their dog telling her that he had seen a van pull up to our street, open the door, kiss the kitten, said “I love you”, drop her off in the middle of the street and drove off.

We were outraged.

Mom got Lucy who was in shock.

We felt bad for her.

She cried all night looking out the window toward the spot where she had been abandoned.

With lots of love and encouragement Lucy has settle herself in our furever home very nicely.

I’m still the boss around here and I love my sisterfurs.

We hope that our story of survival inspire other to rescue and care for their pets.

We remember our trials and tribulations.

We have strong spirits.

We trust that hoomans could look into our eyes and see our soul, our kindness and our everlasting love for them!

Puppy Rocky at Oakwook Kennels

Breeders vs. Puppy Mills by Franca @Rocky_Da_Dawg

Breeders vs. Puppy Mills

Same? NO!

There are a lot of people going around saying “adopt don’t shop”. That statement is true to a point.

Lets first start with the puppy mills or those who breed their pets just for pure PROFIT. Did you know that the female pups are held in a cage for every time they go into heat they are breed? Did you know that doesn’t necessarily mean they are breed with other dogs…could be even a brother! Makes you sick right? Now that’s where the statement of “Don’t shop adopt” will come in! Please be very careful when purchasing a pup or kitty in a store or (carefully look) a home! Do your homework please!! Check if they are a real Breeder or belong to the kennel club. Get references…anything!!! I know in Canada many have been shut down and the owners jailed!! If ever you suspect there are puppy mills around call police or ASPCA!!

puppymill

Now there are the breeders. Breeders usually breed within the same breed. Like my Rocky who is a pure Manchester terrier. (Did you know that the English Setter is almost extinct because not many breeders left?). If you are looking for a specific pure breed then this is the place to go.
Breeders or at least the LEGAL ones are approved by the American/Canadian/English Kennel Clubs. They have specific rules to go by! Each dog must have a pedigree along with them so you know exactly where the pup came from and who its parents are. They raise healthy dogs, in a home, within the family of the breeder and at times even with your pup’s mums and granddads like Rocky did!  Breeders must have everything you need to know about your new pup. Plus the Breeders must have all their dogs registered to show they are pure and healthy and have followed all guide lines provided by the Club.

Canadian Reputable Breeders

With my Rocky…I was able to meet personally with the breeder (she was in New York and refused to ship him on a plane) and I met Rocky’s mum too! I had a contract that stated that Rocky had all his needles, was chipped and that he must be neutered AND if something happened to us and we can’t care for our pup we MUST give him back to the Breeder so they can find another loving home. All breeders take their pups back.

Puppy Rocky at Oakwook Kennels

So when someone says ‘adopt don’t shop’ I agree with that because you are saving the life of the little innocent animal who humans abandoned but don’t feel bad if you have your heart set on a pure breed…you’re not breaking any laws.

Letting your heart love again… by Lisa @lisareed13

Letting your heart love again…

I did not think I could handle having another cat after I lost Butch. I adopted Butch and his sister Julia as two month old kittens from a rescuer, and Butch was the most loving, affectionate cat I had owned. Eight years ago at age 20, my beloved Butch developed renal disease. My father and I gave him sub Q fluids twice a day for six months, desperately trying to extend his time with us. Losing him was so painful I didn’t think I could deal with having a cat again.

Years passed and I missed the companionship and intimacy of having cats, but still feared the pain of loss. My boyfriend would periodically try to convince me it was time. I resisted. He sent me a picture of a cat available for adoption, and suddenly, I wanted a cat.
That cat got adopted, but I was lucky enough to connect with a rescuer who had Otis.

Otis cutie

I saw his picture, I had never had a ginger cat, and fell in love. That was three years ago February. I love Otis more than I can put into words.

I encourage anyone in a similar situation to adopt. There is more roomin your heart than you know. There are
no replacements for beloved lost pets. There is room for more love. I am a better person for the animals that I was privileged to have in my life.

Please Spay Neuter Your Pets

Please Spay & Neuter
Your Pets

Bob Barker had said it for years on his show, “Reminding you to control the pet population, don’t forget to spay & neuter your pets”. Very good advice from a very wise man.

Please see this Youtube video : http://youtu.be/egScPkeNkp0
This Youtube video is packed full of great information!

Spay Neuter

Another source packed full of information regarding spaying and neutering your animals is from Humane Society of the United States. Article and link to great information is below:

http://m.humanesociety.org/issues/pet_overpopulation

The facts are simple, without controlling the pet population, animals will not have enough homes, and therefore will be euthanized, such a shame! Save lives by having your dog and cat spayed and neutered. There are many programs from local
shelters that give a discount on spaying & neutering. It’s the right thing to do, because your saving many precious lives!

For example, adopting Miracle cost us $189.00, but she had all her shots, dewormed, microchipped, and SPAYED! If I were to have that done at an Animal Hospital, the cost would have been much more.
When I adopted Lakota, our local shelter had a program and I received a portion of reimbursement for having her spayed.

Magazine of Lakota and Miracle

My girls are featured in this magazine, it was done by a friend! Miracle on the left, Lakota on the right.
My girls are both spayed, and I’d have it no other way. Please have your dog or cat spayed or neutered, and save lives, it’s a great feeling and well worth it!

Look closely at this photo, not put here to make you cringe, but to make you really think.

The Key here is to CONTROL THE PET POPULATION! All of us that own pets, have the ultimate responsibility of controlling the pet population. Please, save lives and Spay & Neuter your pets!

Please Adopt, Don’t Shop by Raelene C. @raelenechristi7

 Please Adopt, Don’t Shop

I am writing this post to express my strong convictions is Adopting a pet vs. shopping for a pet.
For starters, there is an estimate from the HSUS (Humane Society of United States) that animal shelters care for between 8 million animals a year. An estimated 3-4 million of these animals will be euthanized each year.
See link below:

http://www.humanesociety.org/animal_community/resources/qa/common_questions_on_shelters.html

I can tell you first hand that adopting a pet and saving a life from being euthanized is one of the greatest feelings in the world, as I have two rescues myself.

My girls are Lakota and Miracle, and they I not only rescued them, they rescued me many times in return. Here is a picture of my beautiful babies! They were babies in this photo!

Lacota (left) and Miracle (right)

Lakota was adopted at the age of 6 months old, and she had no training. She wasn’t house broken and no obedience
training at all. When I first adopted Lakota, I was told she was not trainable. Well, 2 weeks after her adoption, she was potty trained, and was already learning tricks. Oh, and I forgot to mention, she is also an agility Champion!

Lacota and her Agility Champion Titles

Miracle was adopted at the age of 3 months, and she was potty trained within two weeks, and already learning tricks as well. She as well is an agility Champion, we just never competed.

Miracle performing Agility Tricks

My dogs are both mixed breeds. Lakota is Lab/Beagle Mix, and Miracles is Australian Cattle Mix. They have no fancy AKC papers, and I could care less! They are two of the most loving dogs I have ever known. They are my world, they are my life, they are my everything. They make me smile & laugh daily! You see, I struggle with MS, and they are my BEST MEDICINE!

Dogs are trainable, cats too, you just have to be consistent and persistent, key words, persistent and consistent. Once you’ve gained your dog’s trust, and they’re gained yours, you’re golden! You can do anything with them. They are my best friends, and my fury kids. I believe it’s people that are not trainable, but animals are very trainable. They want
to please you, that is why I believe God put them here on earth, for a mutual love that can never be matched.

There are so many dogs and cats that need adopting, you have read the numbers, your best friend is in a shelter somewhere close to you, you just haven’t looked yet. Please, don’t wait, or hesitate, go ADOPT your best friend today.

Raelene with her Best Friends

Lakota is now 9 years old, and Miracle is 7 years old! i wouldn’t trade them for anything!
